Orthodontic treatment is a way of aligning and straightening uneven teeth. As a result of which it can improve the appearance of your teeth and help you look after the long term health of your gums, jaw joints and of course your teeth. Sometimes patients have upper front teeth that stick out which can look unsightly. These prominent teeth can be corrected and moved back in alignment with the other teeth. Or perhaps the way in which the upper and lower jaws meet can cause teeth to look uneven. All of these are issues can be uplifted or changed through an Orthodontic treatment. With an improved alignment of the teeth, hygiene and longevity of the same are positively impacted.
Pre-teen treatment (AGE 8 onwards)
One of the most commonly seen habits in children that adversely impact jaw structure and teeth alignment is thumb sucking. In the growing up years, if a child persists with this habit, it causes a significant misalignment of their teeth. However, with the Orthodontic treatment this problem can be corrected for the child.
A permanent solution to teeth alignment issues has been the usage of braces. Orthodontic treatments can be carried out with a removable acrylic plate or fixed braces. A removable brace is a simple plate which is removable and can be easily cleaned. It has fine wires and springs attached that move the teeth using gentle pressure. Whereas, a fixed brace is used when the teeth need to be guided more accurately. These have brackets and bands which are temporarily stuck to the teeth. A flexible wire joins all the brackets and allows the teeth to be moved. Since this can’t be taken out by the patient, it is called a fixed appliance. Fixed braces are not always made up of metal. Other materials such as ceramic can also be used, especially for adults.
These are the most common type of braces. They are made of high-grade stainless steel. As technology has evolved, braces are no longer bulky, they are comfortable and aesthetically acceptable.
This is a relatively newer development in Orthodontics wherein due to the ceramic base, these braces are less visible and more comfortable.
Power Self Ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces use little metal doors to hold the wires instead of elastic ties. Some of the primary advantages of self-ligating braces are that it can speed up the first stage of Orthodontics. Add to that since the metal doors are smaller than the ties, they can be easier to clean in some cases.
Adult Patient Treatment Options
These work just like regular braces, except no one, will see them. These are small, smooth and will seamlessly fit onto the back of your teeth.
Clear Aligners- Invisalign
The Invisalign system is a series of clear overlay templates called aligners that have been generated by computer simulation to move the teeth gradually. This system is available to adult patients with specific orthodontic bite problems.
